Music Spotlight: Twins formed in 2001 on the Hong Kong-based EEG label. Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi have since recorded 11 Cantonese albums and 3 Mandarin albums, in addition to racking up an impressive 36 film appearances. Twins are trying to improve their position in the Mandarin market through performing in China and Taiwan as well as appearing on talk shows in both countries.

Music Spotlight: Arash is originally from Iran but moved to Sweden during his childhood. He launched his musical career in 2004 through combining Farsi and English lyrics with pop and hip hop melodies. His records have gone gold in Germany, Russia, Greece, Slovenia, and Sweden while his singles have charted in 16 countries. A lot of his music deals with love and romance. "Temptation" is a light-hearted number that features Swedish-Mexican singer Rebecca Zadig as a guest vocalist.

Music Spotlight: Fusing influences from neighboring Mali and Nigeria, the nine-piece group Mamar Kassey finds the perfect balance of western and indigenous instruments on Denké Denké. Led by Yacouba Moumouni on vocals, the group also combines Afro-Portuguese rhythms in the mix to produce a great track from a seldom-heard country in the world.

Music Spotlight: Forró comes from northeastern Brazil and began as a dance music based on just accordion, zabumba and a metal triangle. The name itself is assumed to be from forrobodó and means "party" or "great commotion". Some influence from salsa has appeared, but the traditional forró is danced with the arms held similar to the waltz but with the "closed pelvis" position popular in many West African dances. Lyrics can range from romance and jealousy to longing and homesickness as people left the Nordeste looking for work elsewhere.

Music Spotlight: Mägo de Oz (Wizard of Oz) are a Spanish folk-metal band that formed in 1989 but suffered from line-up changes and obscurity until the release of their 1996 rock-opera album "Jesús de Chamberí". Celtic influences come through on many of their releases, with "Finisterra" their most folk-oriented album to date. In 2003 the group came out with the first disc of the "Gaia" triology with two main themes - the Spanish conquest of the Americas and man's ecological abuse of the planet - with the final installment due some time later in 2007 or early 2008.

Music Spotlight: Formerly of the heavy metal band Ekhymosis, Juanes has gone on to make a name for himself in the field of latin pop. He has twelve Latin Grammys and was named by Time Magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people for his charity work involving the victims of anti-personnel mines. He was also awarded France's L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his social activism. His lyrics are always in Spanish, and later in 2007 he'll release his fourth album, "La Vida Es un Ratico".

Music Spotlight: Bhangra Knights is one of the groups that I stumbled upon entirely by accident. I was looking up information on Peugeot cars (I owned a Peugeot 505 until recently) and came across a commercial online with an interesting tune playing in the background (the commercial is uploaded here for anyone interested). A little poking around and I discovered the artist's name ... and from there it was just a matter of finding a valid download for the full-length track. The music video is also worth checking out, with a Hindustan Motors Ambassador that doesn't get trashed.

Music Spotlight: What do you get when you mix hip-hop music with nerds who enjoy sci-fi, computer games, and classic literature? Why, nerdcore of course! MC Lars is one of the bigger names in the genre and has been featured on radio_alouette in the past. This time he takes the beats from a Supergrass song and raps about Herman Melville's Moby Dick. While many nerdcore artists load all their samples onto a laptop for live performances, MC Lars uses a live punk band for musical accompaniment - with Bowling for Soup and Simple Plan having served as backing bands while on tour.
